Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) sanction of media houses in Nigeria in 2015.
This was heralded as a welcomed development to sanitize the sector as most people viewed it. Two years down the line industry watchers are wondering if NBC are really getting the desired results or need to do a lot more.
Reason being that a visit to NBC websites showed that the information on the site had not been updated till date.
It might interest our noble followers on this platform to read some interesting reasons why some of this media houses received a knock on the head. Also, you may wish to know why you may never get to hear the music or see the video of some of your favourites artistes on air or watch certain Movies or programmes on your screen.
Here are some of the sanctions hammered on the media houses. Even our dear station, the largest TV NETWORK in African NTA was not spared considering the fact that it is owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
ITV Abuja was fined One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) for playing a classified NTBB musical titled “Yahooze” by Olu Maintain on August 11, 2015 during its programme “Shine On”. This breaches section 3.1.6 of the Code.
Hot FM Abuja: Fined One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) for breaching Section 3.1.6 of the Code. Station played a classified NTBB musical titled “Bang bang” by Jesse J ft Nicki Minaj and Arianna Grande on August 7, 2015 at 3:15pm.
Hot FM Abuja: Fined One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) for playing a classified NTBB musical titled “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj on August 14, 2015 at 3:15 pm. This breaches Section 3.1.6 of the Code.
Hot FM Abuja: Fined One hundred thousand Naira (N100,000.00) for breaching section 3.1.6 of the Code. Station played a classified NTBB musical titled “Gbesere” by Lil Kesh on August 19, 2015 at 11:54am.
Ray Power FM Ilorin: Fined One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) for breaching sections 3.13.2.2(c), 3.1.6 & 3.6.1 of the Code. Station on August 6, 2015 at 12:48pm aired musical by Kevin Little titled “Turn me on” which contains indecent lyrics such as “One
hand on the ground and bumper cock sky high winning hard on me, got my
python. Hollerin for mercy, yea hey-ai, then I whisper in her ear so
wine harder. And then she said to me Boy just push that thing push it
harder back on me”.
Kiss FM Abuja: Fined One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00)
for airing content that is morally and socially unacceptable for public
consumption. Station on August 3, 2015 at 11:00am during its programme
“Story for the Gods” featured a man called in to
complain that he is addicted to sex, his wife does not satisfy him, and
he has found someone who satisfies him better outside his matrimonial
home, he is losing his love for his wife”.
A caller said he should go out once in a
while in order to satisfy his urge. One of the presenters advised the
woman to boost her sex drive; that probably she didn’t have enough sex
before marriage. One of the SMS sent in read “Some men know what they are, yet they decide to marry a Holy Mary”. This breaches section 3.1.7, 3.6.1 & 3.7.10 of the Code.
Grace FM Lokoja: Fined one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000.00) for breaching section 3.1.6 of the Code. Station played a classified NTBB musical titled “Drunk in Love” by Beyonce on August 20, 2015 at 5.59am.
AIT Abuja: Warned for breaching section 3.3.1 of the Code. Station during its programme “Saturday Treat”. August 8, 2015 at 9:20am featured a guest by name Oneresa Komolafe who claimed that they have oils that can make one pregnant the next day, and the presenter just said “Wow”.
AIT, (Int’l): Cautioned and advised
to preview tapes before going on air. Station on August 18, 2015 at
6:40 pm played a song by Bobby and Alexis Akpan with clips of under age
kids on a yatch popping champagne and frolicking way above what was
appropriate for their age. This breaches section 3.13.2.2(c) & 4.2.2(a) of the Code.
Ray Power FM Abuja: Warned and advised to always preview tapes. Station on August 23, 2015 at 2:44pm played a song titled “My Body” by Timaya and Solidstar with indecent and vulgar lyrics like “She say am nice, she say am sweet, she say she want my body, she say she can’t do without the body. She say am hot and my body perfect, she knows am tough when my cocky gets hard. I give her all the magical Rhythm. She say please don’t groan oh-come give me some more. E sweet like potatoe, she like the way I chew her like a chewing gum, like the way she lick me like tom-tom. I say baby hum come all my buboes to my closet. I say run come – take off your blouse and take off your shirt. I like the way she give me that original sound, anytime I get her booty down. She give me that original sound she always like to chill at the water side now make love at water side”. These breaches section 3.13.2.2(c) of the Code.
Kiss FM Abuja: Cautioned and advised to rescheduled programme to watershed. Yeche a presenter with the station during the programme “story for the Gods” on
August 5, 2015 at 11:00 am, told a brief story of a girl that was
molested by a doctor and she gave a vivid decription of the abuse like “the doctor touched her boobs, started fingering her, that he wants her to get wet”
and it went on for a while. A caller phoned in saying if the doctor
had gained penetration, she should have sued him, another caller blamed
the victim for allowing the fingering to continue. They kept on
repeating the word “penetration” in the programme. This breaches sections 3.1.7, 3.6.1 & 3.7.10 of the Code.
NTA 24, Abuja: Warned for inserting Lux soap advert into Grade A programme, a LIVE broadcast of National Security Summit 2015 aired on August 17, 2015 at 11:30am. This breaches section 7.0.32 of the Code.
Crowther Love FM Abuja: Warned for breaching sections 7.3.5 & 7.3.18 of the Code. Station on August 17, 2015 at 9:02pm aired the programme “Your health and my health” with
Dr. Sani of Libidon Naturalist Center claiming to use master key Herbal
flusher to treat long and short term infections. He also advised
people with infertility, impotence, childlessness, low sperm count,
miscarriage etc to come to his office for check-ups, with his ultra
modern detecting machines that can detect any health problem.
ITV Abuja was issued a final warning
to respect the family belt. Station on August 20, 2015 at 3;18pm showed
movie with sexually explicit and obscene material during children’s
belt. Eg. “Love making scene of a man lying on top of a woman deeply kissing each other”. This breaches section 4.2.2(b) & 3.7.3 of the Code.
Nigeria Info FM Abuja: Warned for breaching section 7.0.15 of the Code. A presenter with the station Kimberly on August 19, 2015 at 5pm endorsed product of Emma Exclusive thus: “We sell all kinds of female wears”, breaching section 7.0.15 of the Code.
Aso FM Abuja Warned for breaching Section 7.3.1, 7.3.2, 7.3.5, 7.3.7 and 7.3.18.of the Code Station on August 12, 2015 at 12:30 pm, during its programme “You and Your Health”
featured a guest, who claimed to have drugs that could treat hepatitis
A, B, C correction of erectile dysfunction, heart problems, chronic
pain. He said he successfully treated a patient who had pancreatic
cancer for chronic pain until his death.
Midland FM Ilorin: Warned for breaching section 7.0.15 of the Code, John Adewoye a newscaster with the station on August 11, 2015 during its programme “Rokeke” promoted “lateef Chocolate Tea” thus: “It reduces body diseases, it has vitamin A and B and that, its good for eye sight”.
FRCN Harmony FM Ilorin: Warned for advertising an alcoholic product “Bull Dry Gin and Bull Darkrum Gin before the stipulated time of 8:00 pm. The adverts were aired on August 14, 2015 at 7:35 pm during its programme “Figbadun Sayo” thereby breaching Section 7.4.4 of the Code.
AIT Ilorin has been off air since July 22, 2015 due to faulty transmitter.
Kogi FM Lokoja: Warned for breaching section 3.9.1 of the Code. A presenter with the station during its programme “Reggae Time” aired on August 20, 2015 at 1:41pm used an inciting language like “We will throw bomb like fire on the heads of bad leaders”.
Royal FM Ilorin: Warned for
exceeding 60 secs spot advert. Station on August 12, 2015 aired advert
of Kunlex Driving School which lasted 1 minute 42 seconds and Royal
Crescent Valley International School lasting 1 minute 20 seconds
respectively. This breaches section 7.0.10 of the Code.
Crystal Radio: Warned for breaching section 7.0.10 and 7.0.15 of the Code. Fatima Sulaiman a presenter with the station on August 11, 2015 at 3:15pm promoted “Mustapha All Stories” saying “You can count on them, she also named some of their products”. The advert also exceeded 60 seconds spot advert.

EBS Radio Benin: Fined one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000.00) for breaching sections 7.3.5, 7.3.7 & 7.3.18 of the Code.
Station on August 31, 2015 between 4.25pm and 4.40pm aired
trado-medical advert of different herbalists that claimed to treat all
sort of diseases such as infertility, impotency, constant headache,
toilet infections, diabetes, body pains etc.
Adaba FM Akure was issued a serious warning, stating that a minimum fine of five hundred thousand Naira (N500,000.00)
shall be imposed on subsequent breach. Station during its programme
“Lape Orin” aired in August 19, 2015 between 10:03 am & 11:00 am
featured some children who claimed to be witches, confessing to have
killed so many people and drained their blood, saying “It is Bose that asked us to drain his blood and keep it” without protecting the identity of the children involved in this negative social incidence. This breaches section 4.2.2i,l,n of the Code.
ITV Benin: Cautioned for breaching section 7.3.10 of the Code. Station on August 6, 2015 at 1:27 pm aired advert of Fortune Skin Care which offers treatment for beauty thus: “We
go solve all your skin disease like pimples, stretch mark, eczema, even
cream reaction, sun burn, shaping of body” without stating the likely
side effects”.-*
